Watch Your Dry Weight and Fluid Consumption

As kidney function declines, your body may struggle to eliminate excess fluid, leading to fluid retention and potential complications. Common symptoms include sudden weight gain, increased blood pressure, and swelling (edema), which may appear in the ankles, hands, eyelids, face, or abdomen. In more severe cases, fluid may build up in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing—a condition known as pulmonary edema.

To prevent fluid overload, it's essential to monitor and control your daily fluid intake. This includes not only water but also beverages like tea, coffee, milk, soft drinks, and soups—as well as liquid-based foods like yogurt, broths, jelly, ice cream, and even ice. For many patients, limiting fluids can be one of the hardest adjustments, but finding a balance is key. Drinking in small amounts and staying aware of your maximum daily limit can help you stay comfortable and avoid complications. Your care team will help set a personalized daily fluid allowance based on your individual needs.

Tips for Controlling Thirst and Fluid Retention

Limit Salt Intake: Salt increases thirst and contributes to fluid retention. Cooking without salt may feel unfamiliar at first, especially in cultures where salt is a common seasoning—but it’s a crucial step in managing your fluid levels.

Avoid Salt Substitutes: Some contain potassium, which may be harmful for kidney patients.

Enhance Flavor Naturally: Use herbs, spices, lemon juice, vinegar, or garlic to make meals more enjoyable without salt.

Track Your Fluids: Keep a daily log of everything you drink or eat that counts as liquid.

Remember:

Control your fluid intake, reduce salt in your meals, and explore flavorful alternatives to support your kidney health and feel your best every day.
